How E-Commerce Works in Pakistan
16 min
The market you are actually selling into
Online retail in Pakistan has grown quickly, but it has its own shape, and the differences are not details — they decide whether a shop survives.
Cash on delivery dominates. A large majority of orders are paid in cash at the door. That single fact changes your cash flow, your return rate and your risk on every order.
Trust is the scarce resource. Buyers have been sent the wrong item, a fake item, or nothing at all. Every element of your shop is either building trust or spending it.
Instagram and WhatsApp are shops. Enormous volumes of goods are sold with no website involved at all — a catalogue, a DM, a courier booking.
Marketplaces own discovery. Daraz has the buyers. Your own site has the margin. Most successful sellers end up on both, for different reasons.
What you are signing up for
E-commerce is not a website project. It is a retail business with a screen in front of it — buying, pricing, stock, packing, delivery, complaints and returns.
The website is perhaps a fifth of the work. The course is weighted accordingly.
